    The Matrix of a Learner
    To Carla Cross, Karen Hamilton, Debbie Plested and Mary Rezk.
    I am Tracy Hanson, Founder of Next Generation Global Education (ngge.org) and designer of "The Matrix of a Learner" I travelled to countries around the world to introduce what you are describing as the "innovative design and rationale for the school/learning environment of 2020" but not just for the U.S. Department of Education but for all governments around the world. For to assume that we face different obstacles here then other country couldn't be farther from the truth.
    If in fact the UN expects to make better gains on the Post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals then they did Pre 2015 SDG then it will be done through education just within a shared global learning environment available to all learners.
    I love what you have done with the site and support it fully. I hope that you might be interested in the model we've presented.

    Building a personal learning network may seem daunting given the number of resources available. The simplest beginning may be to select useful aggregates then adding to them carefully. Articles such as Wikipedia's Comparison of Feed Aggregators can aid in this selection. Each site added to the network should be examined carefully to include only the best and most useful resources for the learner. By choosing each resource carefully, the network remains tailored to each author.The site should be monitored for usefulness, and if it is found to be substandard for the users purposes, should be removed so as to build the most organized, effective, and useful PLN. Skip Via of the University of Alaska School of Education believes that the PLN should not be passively utilized. By participating in discussion boards, blogging, and publishing original or mashed works, learners should add to the collective online intelligence of the community. He, and others, believe that it a responsibility as a member of the community of practice (CoP). Members of a particular community, bound by common interest posting original works, mashing of works, opinion pieces, links to works of interest and so on creating, revising, and maintaining the body of information common to them all.

    PLN provides organization for current resources. Many online programs can assist in the organization of the resources and creation of the PLN. The use of aggregates, for example, assists in this organization by gathering information from each and displaying it. Programs such as Netvibes and Google Reader not only display and check favorite sites and blogs for updates, but it finds sites of similar interest. Hootsuite is the self-described social media dashboard, providing access to subscribed sites such as twitter and facebook from one site; bookmarking sites such as Delicious and Symbaloo aid in organization of online resources for the learner as well. Instapaper and LaterThis provide a service that allows bookmarking of sites to be read at a later date. Notefish, Mashup,and Evernote provide online spaces where information can be stored and accessed any place, any time. Skype and Zorap provide communication tools of different types. Creating a PLN is a matter of sifting through the plethora of available organizing tools and resources to locate the best for the user's specific purposes.

    The California Open Source Textbook Project (COSTP) is a collaborative project that began in 2001 to advocate for free and open access content. The initial goals were to spread open resources, leverage already existing free resources, harness curriculum through intellectual capital of teachers and to deploy open licenses. According to opensourcetext.org,California has seen significant cost reductions and has increased the quality and range of its textbooks. They work with some of the organizations noted above- Flat World knowledge, CK-12, MIT Open Courseware, as well as Connections ISKME, CCCOTC and Merlot (A Learning Object Repository.)

    2012 from Jane Hart.Hart
    Growing up digital, many of today's kids have been sharing and collaborating all of their lives. Sites like Facebook and YouTube boast huge communities willing to share everything from the most trivial to the most important of ideas. Today's generation is no longer willing to sit passively and have culture pushed upon them; they are more likely to be producers of culture. They are comfortable working in teams and sharing on social networks. EduCitizenship 2020 sees this social nature and willingness to create partnerships as one of the key trends that will influence learning in the future.
    Jane Hart, of the Centre for Learning & Performance technologies who compiles a yearly list of the Top 100 Tools for learning, sees 4 emerging trends in the tools being used in education.

Every year the organization works with Educause, 300 colleges and universities and an Advisory Board to compile an overview of upcoming technological trends. The Horizon Report forecasts short term and long term trends. The annual Horizon Report "identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative inquiry on college and university campuses within the next five years. The 2010 Horizon Report is the seventh in the series and is produced as part of an ongoing collaboration between the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI)," (Horizon Report 2010, Executive Summary)

    Many educators look at the new tools, initiatives and curriculum changes and immediately shut down. They think that they cannot work with such advancements or simply that they don’t have the time or money to finance such dreams. However, putting such barriers aside, educators and administrations have to acknowledge and embrace the fact that teaching and schools are changing. Technology is changing the way lessons can be approached, curricula can be developed and even the role of educators in this digital world. This costs money and time.
    Furthermore, schools are taking on new shapes and new roles; they are becoming community staples, resource centers and information hubs. As the role of the teachers and learners changes, so does the curriculum, the tools and the face of the environments that are engaging students. Administrators can incorporate and embrace new technology, new educational practices and initiatives in every part of their schools. Technologies such as networked or stand-alone computer workstations, along with suitable software and applications, can aid teachers in the creation of learning spaces that support the development of investigation, communication, collaboration and production skills.

    Dan talks about professors who stand in front of class lecturing with no student interaction, spending hundreds of dollars on textbooks that are never opened while newer and free information is available on the internet, and writing tests that are simply regurgitation of facts. Dan believes, "Society no longer cares how many facts we can memorize because in the information age facts are free....Education isn't about teaching facts. It's about stoking creativity, and new ideas. It's not about teaching students to conform..it's about empowering students to change the world for the better."
    Dan dropped out of university because as he says, "My schooling was interfering with my education." Unable to get the interaction he desired, he is now focusing full time on his YouTube work. Currently, he is working on his Dan 3.0 channel where he has turned his life over to his video subscribers who will plan his life for the next year.     Educators Agree: We need to know and understand our students! {spacerwiki280.gif}
    And it's not just Dan and Erica who see the problems. Don Tapscott sees many of the same problems. He points out that a person frozen in time from a century ago would marvel at the changes in most professions, but if that same person entered a university it would look much the same because the model of education has not changed. Tapscott believes that the digital natives will force a revolution in education because they are so different.
